Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts

The Lincoln Center is internationally known for its amazing performances by the best artistic talents in the worlds of ballet, classical music and more. And recently it had the privilege of a one-night-only, extra-special dance extravaganza by yours truly! Jeff decided to do an impromptu photo shoot the other night, and I obliged by dusting off some of my grade-school ballet moves. The tourists were taking photos while I was posing. I wonder if someone in Ohio has a shot of this?

In any event, here’s a nugget about the Lincoln Center, which is six blocks from our house, if you’re interested:

One of 11 resident organizations, Lincoln Center (Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts) presents some 5,000 programs, events and initiatives each year. Its performance series include American Songbook; Great Performers; Lincoln Center Festival, the Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Midsummer Night Swing, Mostly Mozart, and White Light Festivals; and Live From Lincoln Center, the country’s only series of live performing arts telecasts.

Our friends Tommy and Nolan came for a visit last week from Orange County!

It was so much fun! We started the weekend off by going to a fabulous rooftop bar, called Rare View Chelsea, and having drinks with an awesome view of the NY skyline. After that, we hit up several more bars in Greenwich and met all kinds of people. As you can see neither the boys or I had any fun. You know me, let’s dance party! It was really fun to catch up and have fun with our good friends on the town.

The next day we met up again and headed over to Central Park. We walked all over and got to show our friends some of our favorite spots. I love the pic of all of us in front of Bethesda Fountain (even though the stranger who took the photo somehow managed not to get even a speck of the fountain in the photo!). It was really hard to say goodbye. We sure miss everyone at home and we hope the rest of our friends and family will visit soon.

Prospect Park in Brooklyn is NOT as cool as Central Park!

Look, I’m not trying to hate on Prospect Park. It’s a nice park and all but it is no Central Park. Why am I harping about this? Because someone tried to convince Jeff that Prospect was the most beautiful green space in all NYC, so we had high hopes. Upon arrival, we were like, um, okay, decent place, but y’all realize it’s not Central Park, right?

Anyhow, some of the nicer things about the park are a few lakes, beautiful birds and, well, that’s it.

Let’s get out of the city and go to the Catskills!

Now I actually didn’t know the Catskills are a real place. it just sounds like something made up in a book. But they are in fact real, north of the city 100 miles or so, and one day Jeff and I rented a car, drove a few hours to go hiking. It was great! The hike was pretty hard but all the walking in the city must be paying off because I just ran up the mountain! Yay! The summit was great. We plan on going back in the fall, as you can see everything is very green and we want to check it out with autumn colors.

On the way back, we stopped by a funky furniture store that had fun art in the yard.

Humans of New York (HONY)

Here is a pic of Jeff and I meeting famous photographer Brandon Stanton. He created a website, blog, Facebook page and Tumblr to showcase his amazing photos of humans in New York. I just recently found these sites and the photos are amazing.

Brandon really does an incredible job of taking interesting photos of people on the streets of NY. You will see eclectic pics of the diverse population that lives here. I had the chance to say hello to him at his first meet-n-greet at Central Park. The really cool thing about Brandon, other than the fact his photos are awesome, is that he is a REALLY nice guy!

Many of his photos remind me of Jeff’s artistic eye. Jeff is always taking photos, and even though I get cranky sometimes because of his constant picture taking, the truth is, my blog is filled with Jeff’s amazing photos. So cheers to Jeff and Brandon.

So there I was, just walking down the street in SOHO, when I saw my favorite ginger actor - Jesse Tyler Ferguson! I wanted to ask for a pic so bad, but I kept my cool as he was with a friend and clearly didn’t want to be disturbed. I gave him a huge geeky wave, he smiled and waved back. So now I’m best friends with Tyler. Lucky him!

That is me happy! A well-deserved drink after a long day of exploring NYC. Here I am at a garden restaurant in Brooklyn called Gran Electrica. It had decent Mexican food. At least it did until it came time to the salsa. Once again, NYC can not deliver on real salsa. They gave us a tablespoon side of some red stuff and called it salsa. For shame!

Jeffy on the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge is a little over a mile long, and the walk is well worth it! It’s a great way to see the skyline of Manhattan and Brooklyn. You also get to see Ellis, Governors and Staten islands, as well as the Statue of Liberty.

Food truck event!

We went to a food truck event in Brooklyn recently and I finally had decent Mexican food! I don’t have a pic of the Mexico Blvd. truck but here are some of the tacos. It was legit! We also ate tacos from the Kimchi Taco truck that were out of this world. NYC has a lot of great things, but Mexican food is not typically one of them. Thanks to this truck event I am happy again!

The Figment Festival on Governors Island!

What a fun day! First let me share with you a little about Governors Island. It’s located a few minutes (by ferry) to the south of Manhattan. The island has a rich history, and was mostly used for military purposes. Now, it’s a free park, open to the public but only during the summer. Most people come here to ride bikes, play in the grass or visit the historical buildings. Here is the website. The views of lower Manhattan are spectacular!

Jeff and I went on a special weekend - The Figment Festival! I had no idea what to expect as I had never heard anything about Figment. I’m glad I didn’t know anything because it turns out having an open and accepting mind it what makes Figment fantastic.

This is how it is described on their website:

FIGMENT demonstrates what the arts can be: participatory, bursting with creativity and completely free, born from the desire to share imagination and invention between artists and the public.

So it turns out that a bunch of artists set up their work all over the park, and you get to view and/or participate for free. It’s really fun! There were little plays taking place, interactive art, a huge tree house, mini golf, ravers and so much more! The entire place was one big fairyland! I’m going again next year for sure!
